Let me start by saying I got to access the reading so yay! Anyways! In an attempt to get something written down in the last half hour before the blogs are due here are my thoughts! Firstly I wanted to discuss Vernacular as a concept. I think its interesting that the concept of 'Web vernacular' is considered because Vernacular as far as I've learned it has to do with social class, and the types of slang and ethnic stories that are passed from one person to the other.
However as far as the concept of 'Web Vernacular' goes I do not associate chain letters, IM services or websites like Twitter with keeping traditions or sharing personal information about your online activities. (194) cites the fact that the internet age and the people that use it are self obsessed and focused on themselves with things like home pages, pages for pets ect.
The concept of Vernacular I learned about (as I discussed above) is more focused on important things. Though the internet is a valuable asset to learning and general knowlege it is not essential in keeping up traditions. I personally feel that people are too dependent on things like MySpace, Facebook, Meebo, ect. These are nice things to have but they aren’t really necessarily in order for people to function properly. I enjoy using these types of things, but my stance as far as the internet goes is a negative one. While the internet is a powerful technological tool there are also a darker side of it.
Take for instance the illustration for “Bushes response to Hurricane Katrina” the caption and the picture are funny but people using photoshop to poke fun at a serious situation is wrong. The internet much like the content of folklore and vernacular alike is ultimately controlled by the environment and the people that take part in it. Vernacular is a way of communication as well as interaction and self perservence, however if it is taken and turned into something negative it can have both amusing and disastrous outcomes
